Subject: [rollei_list] precautions with cable-release?

I recently bought a rolleifix in haste from e-bay before realising that it
was actually a rolleifix+pistol grip....! Having discarded the pistol bit I
now have a perfectly serviceable cable release too. I use a 2.8fx and will
certainly need a cable release if I'm to justify using a tripod - shutter
release takes quite a push o n this model. All I'm concerned about is
whether one could damage the internal shutter mechanism through an over
zealous 'step' on the cable release? Presumably the rollei has some kind of
blocking mechanism - and afterall the unit was designed for a rolleiflex -
but there can be no harm asking.

I'm not even sure what shutter this camera uses, however, not many shutters require a lot of force on a cable release to trip them. About the only exception is some "self-setting" shutters. These, like a double action revolver, require enough force on the shutter release to cock them. No Rollei uses a shutter of this type.
In the Rolleis using Compur shutters the cable release is not connected directly to the shutter bu rather to the same mechanism the front release button actuates. In most Rollei models there is a short pin in this socket. The end of the cable release bears on this pin. If its missing the release throw will be very long and feel strange.
Some cable releases can have a lot of internal friction. This can be felt easily when the release is worked without connecting it to anything.
None of this may apply to the FX but its been my experience with other Rolleis, and indeed, most cameras, that shutter releases should work smoothly and without a lot of force being necessary.
