1) If the serial numbers of the lenses are seriously out of whack for the vintage, then the lens has been replaced.

2) the bayonet mounts for the Tessar/Xenar lens changed sizes during the Automats. Although the Bayonet size remained Bay I for Automats the size of the Tessar and Xenar became larger and this is reflected in the fact that some of the later Automats have Bay I bayonets having a black ring as part of the inner mount surrounding the lens, while later bayonets with the larger Tessar and Xenar lack this extra black painted metal.

Is there any reliable way to tell when lenses have been replaced? I have
one Automat that clearly has been, as they are NEW Carl Zeiss Tessars,

and, knowing Summicrons went through a process of improvement (I have a
1-cam Summicron-R 50 that cannot approach my 3-cam), did the Rollei
Xenars, Xenotars, Planars, etc, go thru improvement? Are newer ones
better?
