Hi Peter,

I don't think the 28/35/45/90 Contax G lenses were ever made in Germany. I
believe they started production in Japan.

Regards,

Austin

Probably has to do with tooling as to why the 16mm is German made. For a
lens like that there is probably far less demand so it would NOT make sense
to shift it's manufacture to Japan. Too costly and the return too little.
For the other focal lengths yes, as they were more in demand and could be
made more cost effectively.
I know some like to believe the romantic notion that the German
manufacture was better, but like anything else I thinks its more a tall tale
that gets larger over the years. Yahsica did very well with lens manufacure
on their own and with Zeiss.

    Marc, Austin,

I've just checked my Contax G lenses...
    16mm - Germany;
    21, 28, 35, 45 & 90 all Japan.

I cannot see a marking on the G2 itself but there is a Contax sticker
centrally on the bottom plate which I do not want to remove - it may be
    under this.
