Subject: [rollei_list] Which Rolleicord
I am thinking of buying a Rolleicord as a camera to travel
with. I
shoot mostly black and white. From what I have read while
lurking on
this list and elsewhere, I am leaning toward a IV or V.
What are the
tradeoffs amongst these models?
Should I buy one which has already had a CLA (and if so,
from whom?) or
buy from ebay and figure the cost of a CLA into the price?
Thanks,
Peter Schauss
My primary experience is with the Rolleicord IV, I have
one and use it. Also, my first real camera was an IV. My
only objection to the later versions is that they are more
complicated and a little heavier, the IV is a sort of
minimum camera, that is, it has everything you need for
general shooting but no extras. The camera is very light and
has (IMO) excellent ergonomics.
However, there is not a tremendous difference between
models and condition is everything. These are all excellent
cameras.
I would count on having to have a CLA done even if the
seller claims its been done already. There are lots of
caveats to buying anything used, I won't repeat them other
than lens condition is vital. "Cleaning marks" mean fine
scratches and are to be avoided, the lenses are not
replaceable, at least not economically.
The quality of construction and design of the Rolleicord
is equal to the Rolleiflex, the difference is mainly in the
complexity.
