For web and word processing a 486 is fine. Run contemporary software and don't upgrade to a more recent version of a Word Processor. These have been padded out by the software vendor such that the customer thinks he/she needs to upgrade their computer. That's how the software and hardware business have managed to ratchet up people into using what by any standards is a blazingly powerful computer just to emulate a typewriter.
