How would you characterize the image?

I had a 300mm Heliar for my 8 X 10 camera for some years. Then I stumbled across this fellow who had a 300 Apo-Lanthar in Compur Electronic shutter, but missing the cable to connect the shutter to the control box. I swapped him a Nikkormat body for it. At the time Geiss America had the connecting cables new, but for a ridiculous price. I forget where I found the cable, but ended up getting it for something like thirty bucks.

I then proceeded to shoot some side by side comparisons between the Heliar and the Apo-Lanthar. I used Fuji Velvia 8 X 10 for the tests, mostly because I happened to have some and could process it quickly in my Jobo.

The Heliar produced images with what Michael Barrington-Martin described as "a unique gauzy sharpness", which is about as accurate as I could be. Sharp images which looked as though overlaid by a soft image. Grand for portraiture.

The Apo-Lanthar images were visibly sharper under a 10X magnifier, with absolutely no color fringing. I use twigs against a blue sky to check for this.

After the comparisons, I sold the Heliar and used the Apo-Lanthar for years. I sold it last year when I saw what they were going for on eBay!! Two grand for an old Nikkormat body and thirty bucks. Not a bad profit, plus years of free use.
