I know exactly what you are saying, and I agree with you. I suppose we
ought to defer to Marc regarding factory QC procedures. Yet F & R's
reputation  depended on quality. 

I would aver that the differences among lenses, pre- or post-war, were
nearer to exquisite vs. ecstatic than to excellent vs. reject. Absent
gross errors that to be sure must have slipped by when a line inspector
had a little too much during mittag refreshment, so?

Let's put the question to the list, though: post your information on QC at
F & H, especially regarding lenses; what were the manufacturing
tolerances, how were they measured, and how was consistency assured?
