[rollei_list] Re: ?? True Sizes of Tripod Mounting Holes

This doesn't help but I thought the two standards were both Whitworth thread form not UNC.

Dear All,
My cousin back in Ireland has an old plate camera, which has two tripod holes, neither of which seem to fit a modern tripod screw. Were there any other common standards, or was it just a matter of makers choice? From what I remember the camera in question was British, and close to a 5x4 in size. All speculation or hypothesizing would be most welcome, though solid historical facts would of even greater value.

Marc, I don't see that there is an equivalence to the
Unified thread and to a standard metric thread. For
the 3/8-16 thread the pitch distance is 0.0625". This
is equal to 1.5875 mm. The 3/8" (0.375") thread size
is slightly smaller than an M10 which has a thread
size of 0.3937" and a pitch of 1.5 mm.

If there were a hypothetical M9.5 thread (0.374") with
a 1.5 mm pitch, it would come quite close to matching
the 3/8-16 thread size. But I don't see that there is
such an animal.

I would like to know the true specifications of
the two common tripod threads. I believe that
the larger thread has a Metric measurement which
works with an SAE thread. I would appreciate
your help in providing the SAE and Metric
measurements for both the smaller and the larger
mounts. Extra points to those who can identify
the actual pitch of the thread (DIN, SAE, or
Whitworth, or whatever).
