Marc,
Most everything correct, but the school was The Bronx High School of
Science. (Of which Eric Goldstein was an alumnus). I came
to La Jolla, California to get away from snow and to marry the beautiful
and wealthy Dawn Rutherford. (who was instantly disinherited
when we married).
The Studio Rollei was liberated from F&H by a Canadian soldier who
rented a room in my family's apartment in NY. He offered me a
Leica, an Automatic Rolleiflex and the lowest price one which was the
9x9 Studio. It took 122 film which was not readily available in
1945. I paid him $75 for it. The other cameras were $300 each! In
1945 dollars.

Franke & Heidecke made a couple of "TLR's on Steroids" in the 1930's.
These are acutely rare, to be polite. Jerry obtained one in the
1940's but shortly thereafter was chased to the West Coast for reasons
which remain obscure, and which modesty forbids me from mentioning:
perhaps it was merely filthy lucre or perhaps those rumors that he was
to be hauled before the House Un-American Activities Committee might
have some weight behind them? <he grins: my own fight with the
Virginia State Bar trumps any of Jerry's problems in explaining his
youthful membership in the Young People's Socialist League at the
Brooklyn High School For Those With Special Needs, or whatever they
are calling it noiw.)
In any event, Jerry has lost track of his Studio Rollei and I simply
have to remind him on occasion that if he ever recovers it, I want the
serial numbers. Shucks, Bob Pins has a standing offer of a grand for
such a camera and you can trump that five or ten-fold today.
Jerry, I appreciate your membership on the List and I hope that you
accept my ribbing you in the spirit in which it is given. You are our
senior member, I believe, and your contributions are really worthy.
