I seem to remember "The weed of crime bears bitter
fruit".
John
Correct! My memory was not working very well this
morning. "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit, crime does
not pay, the Shadow knows... (shadow laugh).
Kato was from _The Green Hornet_ a show done at WXYZ in
Detroit using the same stock company as _The Lone Ranger_
and _Challenge of the Yukon_. WXYZ was independant but
originally sold its shows to Mutual. Sometime around mid or
late 1930's the NBC Blue network outbid Mutual and WXYZ
became a Blue affilliate. Blue became ABC as the result of
an anti-trust action in 1941 and WXYZ became an ABC
affiliate. ABC eventually bought the station. _The Lone
Ranger_ eventually returned to Mutual when it stopped being
popular enough for ABC to continue carrying it.
The _Green Hornet_ had several ties to the _Lone
Ranger_. Britt Read was the Lone Ranger's great grand
nephew, or something like that, was the actual identity of
the _Green Hornet_, had a non-anglo assistant (Kato), etc.
Having been born in Detroit I was an avid listener to
all three of the WXYZ kid shows. Like other shows the
openings and closings of the _Green Hornet_ changed over
time. The one I remember was "He fights the biggest of all
crime: Public enemies who try to destroy our America... The
Green Hornet".
The "Black Beauty" sound was a Valentino sound effect
record of a Deusenberg which was not used for anything else
at WXYZ, I have no idea of how the Hornet buzz was produced.
At one time I could remember the exact wording of the
narration of Britt and Kato going from Britt Read's
apartment "through a passageway built within the walls of
the appartment itself" and leading to an adjacent building
"although supposedly abandoned this building served as the
hiding place for the Hornet's sleek, superpowered car, the
Black Beauty. (Sound of car doors opening and closing and
car starting... guns engine...) "a section of the wall opens
and the gleaming Black Beauty speeds into the night (car
accelerates with gear changes and fades into distance).
This introduction was used in every program for several
years. If I tax my memory I may be able to remember it
whole.
WXYZ shows had a distinctive sound, perhaps because the
sound effects were done in a separate studio from the cast,
an unusual production technique at the time.
