Hi Jan:
It happened to me with the first roll I took with the
Contax II, now it's a film for "training".
I had my doubts about the Rodinal condition from a rational point of view, however I was so sure it would work that I did not consider the previous tests Richard suggested. The foam volume produced during the developer working indicates it was not in good condition, there were
no errors or confusions about chemicals and the like.
The magazine looks in perfect working condition and the shutter fires for every shutter speed according you expect from it. Film insert and magazine have identical serial numbers (this is a significant issue too) and each step to load and unload film, to advance the film, the film feeler sensors, the film knob, the film counter are working according the manual descriptions and even the "foolproof" mechanismis are activated if something is wrong (f.e if you try to release the shutter with the magazine slide covering the film or if you try to take the magazine off without the magazine slide in position). Anyway I'm using a new roll right now and I'll see the results.-

Carlos

Rodinal may indeed have a very long shelf life but it oxidizes like any developer. If the volume of the remaining concentrate is small it means the surface area is large compared to the volume so it will oxidize faster. usually, when a developer turns brown it indicates oxidation. Some developers are somewhat yellow or brown even when fresh, Rodinal and Dektol are examples, but, if the color is dark enough it indicates the developing agent has oxidized and activity is reduced or absent. I am not sure what causes the foam but it has to be a bad sign.
