John, the fellow who said the words is well known and whether or not he was
a philosopher is still up for grabs: it was Marcus Tullius Cicero, the
last Novus Homo to grab the Consulate before the Principate clamped down hard.

That phrase was taught to me by a fellow some years younger than me at
Washington & Lee University, a fellow for whom I purchased his first bottle
of Jim Beam. I knew a LOT of Latin but he was grand at recalling
quotations and, he won! JP is now the Assistant Secretary of the Army for
Civil Engineering, and I shall not attempt to contact him until Katriona
and Rita are out of the poltical purview. But of our small number back in
1971, it is nice to know that the nicest of our number went on to some sort
of glory while the rest of us glomph about behind.
