[rollei_list] Re: Size of Thumbnails

Thanks Carlos,

Telling "Configuration" what film size, in this case 6x9, fixed the thumbnail problem. I got three 6x9 thumbnails!

Robert, I have a limited experience using the Epson scanning software, I use Vuescan regularly and even Vuescan has problems to scan sometimes, in general I know the way to solve the Vuescan problems because I often use it; in the other hand I have used the Epson software a few times and those few times I had no problem scanning film and reflective media with the "Thumbnail" preview mode checked, I have scanned 35mm, 6x6 and 6x9 film formats using the Epson soft, BTW I open the "Configuration" window previously and in "film size" I choose the right size, no problem with thumbnails; I use the Epson software from PS or from PS elements, I use Vuescan like independent scanning software.

The v750 can scan larger formats than my 4490 and I guess the Epson software for the 750 has more options than for the 4490, anyway I could see the software is similar for both scanners from a basic point of view. The situations you mentioned are included in the Epson v750 tehnical support like Top FAQs: "EPSON Scan may not be able to detect film images, or may crop or group the images unexpectedly. This may happen if your images are like the following:"

I have been following this thread and just for the heck of
it I fired up my iMac and Epson V750. Without looking to
see what was in the scanner I set Epson Scan profession to
thumbnail. The last thing scanned was a map I drew so it
was in reflective document mode. I did a preview with the
thumbnail checked and it made one big thumbnail of the whole
map and marked it '1" . It seems like it had
nothing to do with the type of media so I thought.

Next, I put on the MF (120 roll film size) film holder with
three 6x9cm negatives. I set Epson Scan to 'Film with
Film Holder and the type as Color Negative Film. Of course
I set Preview To thumbnail. I got six thumbnails of the
three 6x9cm negatives. I've never really any time in
'thumbnail mode" so all this is new to me. I do
surmise that Epson Scan knows which film holder or even lack
of film holder is in the machine. So realizing it had a MF
holder in there, just diced up up my 6x9 negatives as 6x6
negatives as close as possible. i got 57.7 x 35.4 mm
thumbnails automatically - go figure?! Its not letting me
change the document size over to w: 90mm and h: 60mm while
in thumbnail mode - it defaults to probably the open space
in the film holder. It just does understand 6x9 or 6x7cm
negatives.

Let me know if I am wrong and there is a way to set the
thumbnail size of the negative. I've just been framing
out the negatives I wanted to do a scan of rather than
messing with the thumbnails - life is too short.

It looks like an Epson scanning software
"bug", the default set is "thumbnail"
preview, it would work right for most cases, if you
can't scan MF film, then you need to change to
"Normal" preview, sometimes it works, sometimes
you need to re-install the software and to change the
preview default set, this is the official Epson 4990 FAQ
page for the problem:
