Marc, you know that some complex QBM lenses like wide
angles and other special lenses were manufactured by
Carl Zeiss Oberkochen including some Planars and
Teles, however the rule was that if Rollei wished
massive production the QBM lenses were manufactured in
Singapore or most Rolleinar QBM lenses in Japan by
Mamiya and others manufacturers.
According the Rollei history in Singapore and
regarding optical elements, in december 1971 Rollei
started to manufacture viewfinder systems and prisms
renting a building at Indus Road, Singapore, under
the name "German Optical", they rented three floors
with a space of 6,600 m2; a few months later and under
the name "Rollei Optical (Pte.)Ltd", they started to
manufacture lenses and shutters through know-how and
licensing agreements with Carl Zeiss, Schneider,Rollei
Braunschweig and Optische Werke Voigtländer: on March
1973 this lenses and shutter factory had 800
Singaporeans and 50 German technicians employed there,
and when Rollei moved this factory to their own
factory building on Chai Chee Road, lenses and
shutters production was increased even more to provide
the Rollei 35, Rollei B 35 and Rolleiflex 35 SL
manufactured in the same site: "... the extremely high
labor costs involving in making lenses and shutters
produced in Germany made this plant even more
important for Rollei's profit situation..."(Prochnow,
Rollei 35, a camera history" page 18). Rollei was
running five plants in Singapore by March 1973.
Knowing these facts, it's easy to see that Rollei
massively manufactured non- HFT and HFT lenses for the
cameras that they massively manufactured in Singopore
including the Rollei 35 and Rolleiflex SL 35.
I don't know yet if Prochnow writes details about the
QBM Rollei HFT lenses production in Singapore in the
Report IV, but there are evidence very much that
Rollei manufactured QBM HFT lenses in Singapore for
the SL 35, I think I could have more details for next
weeks.
Nick has two examples about the Sonnar 135 HFT
manufactured in Singapore
All the best
Carlos
