(on stove polish being used for retouching)
I suppose one could attrbute the invention of Photoshop
to the demise of cast iron stoves.

Stove polish is still around, at least in those parts of the country
where wood stoves for heating are still common. I have part of a tube
in the garage (and now that the cool fall weather is back, should
probably polish the stove and clean the chimney).

When I was a kid I spent my summers in rural Michigan. There were plenty of wood burning stoves around for both heating and cooking although most of the people living there year around had butane or propane. There were occasional reports of butane tanks blowing up or maybe there was only one report and I kept hearing it. We used both wood and propane. One house we stayed in had a pump in the sink.
