Are you using them with special attention to your aperture to vary the
results? I did not pay attention to this and think maybe I was shooting too
wide open and had too much softness effect.  I guess I could continue
testing with them, and might, but thought I'd ask you since you said you
have food success with them.

Start with the Rolleisoft 0 and don't stop down more than 5,6-8. These filters are made of flat glass, and should not affect the focus.

I used the Rolleisoft 0 + light green filter and aperture 4 on my 1938 Automat with Tessar for this portrait:
