Yes Siu, you are right, this is the long explanation
that I wrote about it this afternoon (you wrote before
than I :-) including both Magic I and II:

ROLLEIMAGIC FLASH.-
I think that I got it, I think I solved the problem
about the way the Rolleimagic (I and II) flash shoe
and its inner PC socket work, perhaps I did not solve
it before because I am young too much for the
Rolleiflash bulb lamps; despite I have the 2.8C
Rolleiflash, I never used it and I knew almost
nothing about the bulbs.
Really both Emanuel Rollei books, one from 1951, other
from 1966 gave me the answers.
The detail is that the bulbs for the Rolleiflash
could be used even with the camera contact in the ?X?
position BUT till 1/30 shutter speed only. In the X
position there is zero-delay, the camera shuts the
electric circuit when the shutter blades are wide open
and this is the reason is used for electronic flash,
it has zero-delay, HOWEVER the X contact also works
for some bulb lamps till 1/30 shutter speed because
they have ignition fast enough to reach its brightest
intensity when the shutter is wide open if the shutter
speed is not faster than 1/30 (in the ?M? position,
the camera shuts the electric circuit BEFORE the
shutter blades start to open and then the bulbs with
delay start the ignition having time enough to reach
the brightest intensity when the shutter blades are
wide open and then they synchronize from 1sec till
1/500 like the electronic flash in the ?X? position).
IT MEANS THAT THE ROLLEIMAGIC I AND II HAVE THE ?X?
FLASH SYNCH ONLY DESPITE THEIR DEDICATED FLASH USES
BULBS, THEY HAVEN?T THE ?M? SYNCHRO CONTACT This is
the reason Rollei chose the 1/30 shutter speed to use
with the dedicated flash for both Magic s, this
flash is a normal Rolleiflash 2 having the basis
modified to fit it without cord in the special Magic
flash shoe, but the contact is X like the camera flash
socket also is X. 1/30 is the right limit for the bulb
lamp working in the X synchronization.
In other words, the dedicated Rolleiflash ?M? even
being a bulb flash has the ?X? synchro. (The flash has
a confusing name, it?s a marketing error, really it
was called ?M? for Magic, but you can think in the ?M?
synchro as happened to me).
For the electronic flash you have no option in the
Magic 1, bulb or electronic the flash synchro is
always 1/30. In the other hand, there is a big
difference for the Magic 2, the dedicated (bulb) flash
works right at 1/30 only, but using an electronic
flash with the camera in manual mode you can use all
shutter speeds, from 1/30 to 1/500.
BTW , in general a flash with an ?universal? PC
connection always shoots using any speed, the problem
is the results according the synchronization with the
shutter release.

All the best
Carlos
