Subject: [rollei_list] Rolleikin musing
Rolleikins never interested me but this discussion
got me to thinking: Has anyone ever hacked a
Rolleiflex and Rolleikin to create a 24x60 format?
Possible?
I don't think there would be much advantage to such a
rig since the main reason for the existence of the Rolleikin
was to make it possible to use films in the Rollei camera
which were not available in 120 size. This includes many
early color films. While it is wasteful of film to crop out
a narrow area of the 120 negative that is the only drawback
to what you are contimplating. Remember, that for a
panoramic image the lens focal length should really be
considerably shorter than one has in the Rollei.
As far as the machinery, have a look at a Rolleikin, it
is a very cleverly designed adaptor with means for keeping
the film flat and counting frames. I think it would take at
least a similarly precise device for any other format based
on 35mm film. In short, I don't think its either practical
or would be satisfactory due to the focal length of the
Rollei lens.
The Rollei panoramic adaptor does a fairly good job but
the individual images must be stitched using an image
editing program since the images must be corrected for the
mis-matches which inevitably occur at the edges and corners
due to the nature of "normal" lenses. In fact, I have doubts
that the panoramic pictures which appear in the old Rollei
literature were actually made with a Rollei, they look like
they were takan with a rotating camera like the Cirkut
camera. It is possible to correct these images optically but
its not simple.
