You may have seen these before, I forget where they have been. But a heavy lens on a heavy body hand held.

Here's four pictures I took a week or so ago, one through my kitchen window of a hummer at the feeder (he owns the feeder and defends it vigorously).

The other two are of the young Cooper's hawk that frequently visits our backyard smorgasbord (bird feeder).

These were taken with my 350mm Leica Telyt on my Canon 5D body, hand held. A heavy lens on a heavy body.

Yup, its not just weight, its moment of inertia.
I once had an off brand 300mm lens which I often shot hand held with a x2 tele-converter The optics were a very simple design and the lens was long. I got some excellent results. Then after that lens got run over by a bus, I switched to a 500mm mirror lens, which was both physically and optically shorter, though heavier. My results with that were much more prone to camera shake.
All the best
