Possibly but I'm thinking is was just as likely an aesthetic choice, as a clear lamp would be invisible...

I hadn't thought of that, at least hard to see. I look for flashbulbs because I still have the equipment to use them. I _do_ see clear bulbs as well as blue ones on sale.
