This is generally true and has saved a great many pictures.
Even triplets will perform well closed down and set at a
far distance. Several days ago I mentioned a Rolfix 6x9
with a 105mm f/4.5 Schneider Radionar lens. This is a
fairly mediocre lens and yet on one particular camera,
where the lens had been centered more carefully, the lens
was excellent for infinity at f/16.
Many of the very fine pictures we have seen here made with
a Rollei 35, esp. one inside a Cathedral which I believe
caught everyone's attention, was simiarly shot at great
distance.
I do not wish to mix metaphores, as it were, but box camera
will also do well at infinity if they can be kept stable.
There is a fellow on ebay who has made a small living
selling old Agfa 6x9 cameras cameras which he uses on a
tripod. Along with his cameras, he presents some of the
pictres he has made with these simple cameras. He calls
them the most under estimated cameras but the fact is that
at iniinity, lens closed down and on a tripod, many cameras
do surprisingly well.
