I have also held to D-76 as my standard developer but like that Citric-Acid based developer Kodak introduced in the later 1990's. THAT is grea stuff. Somewhere, I have a DIY formula for it.

Perhaps you mean Pat Gainer's PC-TEA.

9 grams ascorbic acid

.25 grams phenidone

100ml TEA

Heat the TEA to around 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the ascorbic acid and stir, dissolving completely. Add the phenidone and stir, dissolving completely. Done.

Actually, I just dump the ascorbic and phenidone in at the same time. There always seems to be a gritty particulate matter left in the bottom of the beaker; I suspect it is inert ingredients from the ascorbic acid powder. In any case, the developer action from batch to batch remains consistent.

I'm sure I'm not coming anywhere close to matching Kodak's QA, but I can make up a batch of this stuff in a fraction of the time it would take to drive to the nearest store that stocks Xtol.

I love PC-TEA. It is cheap, the concentrate lasts over a year, and it yield excellent pictorial results.

Best wishes,
Aaron
