The most bang for the buck is in an Epson V700 - for that many scans
it will come to about $1 each, but I think 12 can be done at a time.
If 4 at a time is good enough (and the quality does not have to
exceed on-screen viewing), the Epson 4490 is the cheapest best thing
out there - currently under $200, I believe.
If money is less scarce than time, then a coolscan 5000 and a slide
feeder, around $1500 together will do very well.

Search B&H et al, and see what you find.
Or hire a service:

It would cost less (but close) than a good scanner.

A friend of mine has 800 35mm slides she would like to scan to make
cds for friends. I haven't looked at scanners in a long time.
What scanner should she get to use with a pc which will do the job
without costing assorted bodily appendages?
If this is outside the bounds, Marc, please delete it.
Thanks.

PS. If any South American members of the list can point me to
where I can order cds of Leon Gieco singing I would much appreciate
it.
