One of the first rules of understanding (or running for that matter) an
enterprise is to come to grips with the fact that the overwhelming
majority of the time, the customer is NOTHING like you, your friends,
your coworkers, your vendors, your consultants. I cannot tell you how
many companies fail to understand this simple truth and so fail to
embark on a detailed and painstaking quest of understanding,
communicating and building a successful relationship with their
customers by knowing and understanding them very very well.
Why do you think the hearing loss is now prevalent with the ipod then?
Since the 60s young people I know have been listening too loud on
headphones (myself included), in the old days with MUCH more power than
an ipod.
The effect of shooting sound directly into the ear canal is a big part
of the problem, and earphone/headphone usage is many times that of what
it was in the 60s-80s. Also, when we are talking about devices where
half a watt will produce dangerous SPLs, it is of little consequence
whether headphone amps were or were not more powerful then or now.
Third, it is much more a social convention to spend a significant
fraction of the day wearing earphones now, so usage is up not only in
terms of penetration but also in terms of frequency/hours of exposure,
and that matters a great deal. Finally, the headphones of the 60s and
70s were much more sound isolating than the ear buds now used by most,
and that encourages higher SPLs when used out of the home to block
unwanted noise and focus on the content.
