    I will add that IMO photomechanical reproduction has
come leagues from the best quality available from
conventional half-tone or other (lithographic for instance)
reproduction. One has only to compare the best reproduction
of, say, fifty years ago, to the modern stuff to be
convinced.

Excellent printing is still lithographic - aided by much technology, but it's still ink on paper from a plate. The digital toys can't touch it. My letterpress halftones are charming at best, but reproductions from high end presses at 200 + LPI and the new stochastic screens are just unbelievably good.

I just saw a new National Geo. The photos are still outstanding, but the production standards have taken a serious dive. That's not progress.
