way.

Pork Roll is an ancient predecessor to SPAM,
dating as it does from the Recent Unpleasantness
with those square-headed Brits in what we now
call the Revolutionary War and which they call "that minor colonial flab". I thought that phrase referred to King George (flab I mean). Well, we _could_ be living in a country owned by the Brits in the east, by Spain in the west and by France up north. Of course, the Scandinavians claim they got here first but I suspect it was really the Chinese.

All this caused me to do a little research. Spam was first produced in 1937 but not under that name. Hormel called it simply Hormel spiced ham. It was the first canned meat on the market that did not need refrigeration. Hormel produced canned ham as early as 1926 but it did require refrigeration. The sales of the product fell off so Hormel held a contest for a name and rewarded someone $100 for thinking up "Spam". Hormel began a very intensive advertising campaign and increased sales tremendously. Of course sales to the military were enormous but also civilian sales were very high because Spam was not rationed. I actually eat the stuff occasionally and find it has changed in the last couple of years. The texture is smoother and more homoginous and there is much less gelatin in the packaging. I think it cooks differently, I don't think it microwaves as well as the older stuff, the result is something like flavored cardboard. Its good emergency food.

I have no on topic Rollei stuff to contribute but did see an 8x10 Graflex at the Getty last week. I don't think they knew what it was and I've forgotten to call the conservator. I did see a couple of pictures of the famous Weegee with a Rollei, evidently he took them up late in his carreer.
