    I remember seeing Tom McCahill as a guest on the
_Tonight_ show, not sure if Johny Carson was doing it then.
He was introduced and remarked to the effect that all
Detroit cars were junk and dangerous, a commercial break was 
immediately
announced and he disappeard when they came back. Out and out
censorship but all of the big three were heavy advertisers
on NBC and everywhere else as well.
    I think you are right that it was _Mechanix Illustrated_
he appeared in. There was another car guy in another
magazine who had a sort of advice column rather than
commentary. I have no memory of his name.
