I just watched the movie "DeLovely", the story of Cole Porter's life and music.
His songs are wonderful and are some of the best examples of American culture,
which is strongest in the popular culture.
"American Culture"? Mutually exclusive terms unless we are discussing
something in a Petri dish....
Cole composed as did fellow Hoosier Hoagy, for a different era. The kids today
have never heard of Porter, Carmichael, Mercer, Kern, Gershwin.
Today we have lyrics "I'm gonna get you sucka..ya rotten motha f..ka"
Saul Bellow in his Nobel Prize speach said "We have become a land of
Phillistines" Indeed!!!
