Actually I'm not sure about the head on the 138S. I know it's a very old
unit, and I'm pretty sure it's too big (tall) for the space I have. I do
understand it's a terrific machine with very flexible capabilities. It's not
the top of the line unit.
Guess I better call and get more info on the 138 (and measure the ceiling
height once again)..
Actually, the L138 is one of the smaller 13x18 enlargers. You need at
least 2.12m ceiling height to put it up. It depends on the head how much
you can lift the head, the CLS1000 is the largest and needs 2.48m for
maximum height. Don't forget that you usually don't have to use maximum
elevation, I have 2.38m ceilings and can make about 70x90cm enlargements
from 6x7 negs with a 90mm Apo-Rodagon with the table in the lowest
position.
If you consider a L138, go for a later model. They have parallel bellows
(the older one has a conical bellow) and a white button in front of the
lens holder. The heads are all interchangeable, the CLS1000 however is
very heavy and needs stronger springs, a second steel cable etc. The old
CLS300 head is not very desirable, it has 2kW (mostly generating heat) and
some no longer available mirrors inside the head. The CLS301 is very good,
2x300W (no fan) and low profile. The big opal bulbs for the condensor head
are no longer available new, they fetch high prices even used. There were
six normal condensors available (240, 200, 160, 130, 110, 85) and some
special models (for point sources etc.) You need different condensor
combos for different focal lengths.
