Oh, of course, they all did... ;-) OK, time to weigh in. Who was
the best, at what, and why?
Since I am the oldest person on this list I will just put in a few
comments, surrounded by [ ] DAW
Artie Shaw
Benny Goodman [Good sound and rhythm, and he allowed my former La
Jolla neighbor, who's dad got an academy award for scoring "The
Wizard of OZ" to live with his family for a while. Not sure of the
circumstances though. Had a picture of them all together. Looks
like a sort of a glossy Kodachrome print, a studio shot I
think. Can't remember whether I scanned it but I'll be in La Jolla
next month and can ask her about the situation.]
Buddy Rich
Chick Webb
Count Basie
Dizzy Gillespie [Nice music, poor technique]
Gene Krupa [What a beat]
Harry James [Tone, my instrument]
Illinois Jacquet
Jon Faddis
Lionel Hampton [Sorry, not my taste and not my instrument]
