& Rollei Connection?)
Oh, of course, they all did... ;-) OK, time to weigh in.
Who was the
best, at what, and why?
Artie Shaw
Benny Goodman
Buddy Rich
Chick Webb
Count Basie
Dizzy Gillespie
Gene Krupa
Harry James
Illinois Jacquet
Jon Faddis
Lionel Hampton

There is a trick to this, I think... but I can't quite
figure out what it is. Certainly they are all great
musicians but there must be something more: the selection is
odd because of those left out. Goodman, of course, stands
out as an extraordinary multifaceted talent and man with an
interesting history. Who are we to compare Lionel Hampton
to? Buddy Rich vs: Gene Krupa or Jon Faddis vs: Harry James.
And where are Woody Herman or Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey or
Louis Armstrong or Bix Beiderbecke for that matter? Or the
Duke (not John Wayne), or all the arrangers who'se names
never appear on the record labels? Something funny here:
were they all photographers, are we to see a gallery of
Benny Goodman photos? Does anyone remember Benny's brother?
Chick Webb was also the "orchestra" billed as Ella
Fitzgerald and "her orchestra". So, shall we be off to the
Manhattan Room or the Cafe Rouge or slip up to 52nd street
and the Famous Door? My slick chick has a friend...
