During my youth I simply used the little sheets of
exposure guides
that were packed in each film box. It included
corrections for beach
scenes, indirect sunlight, cloudy days, etc. Someone will
remember
it, it really worked for most cases.
I do recall the "sunny" rule, which has been discussed by
this group
but sadly have forgotten it. I think it started with
bright sun,
f16, and some film speed but don't recall the ASA used.

f/16 at 1 over the the film speed, i.e, for ISO-100 its
1/100th second.
I remember the exposure guides very well, I think they
are still on some Kodak data sheets. Some old photographt
manuals and the British Journal Almanac have extensive
exposure tables for all parts of the world and in all
seasons. By the time you have looked it all up your subject
will have gotten bored and moved on.
