Dirk,
I bought one of the earlier versions with 2MP on ebay when the price came
down.
It is a 'nice toy'. It works, the viewing screen is in the viewfinder hood
and the image is stored on a SD memory card. It has a fixed focus, fixed
aperture lens. The quality is what you would expect: 'rubbish' compared to a
film camera. Rubbish also when compared to that available from a Minox 'spy'
camera or a Rollei 16 or Instamatic 110 film.
I also have one of the film versions which takes the Minox film cassette. I
wanted to compare the quality to my Minox 'LX' but the shutter does not
open/close although it does 'click'. I took it to pieces to find out what
was wrong but could not get in 'deep enough' in the time available. I will
have to try again, it can't bee too difficult. Just trying to work out how
the plastic clips together.
They are made in China. I did find the manufacturing company on the internet
and they make many different miniature replicas. Inside, they are a cheaply
made, plastic toy camera unit fitted into an outer housing made to resemble
a camera with a famous name. I guess the internal workings are the same for
all these replicas, just fitted to a different outer shell.
They are OK to put on a shelf with your collection but they are not a 'user'
camera other than for showing off and as a conversation piece.
They 'feel' fine to hold but fiddly to use; the viewfinder is small and
dark. Difficult to aim when in daylight. You have to wind the crank each
time before you can release the shutter. In use it would not be long before
the painted coatings wear off or a plastic part breaks.
Now the idea of converting a 'Baby', that is a much better idea. Good feel,
compact size, great lens.........
At the moment a 'Baby'is not too expensive. Soon the prices could go
up.....!
Regards
John
