[rollei_list] Re: Marvin Wallace and I Disagree

Mr. Wallace wrote in part...
Adams, talked freely about image management, which was a
corrective procedure for such things as converging verticals, cropping per
se he did "not" as a rule.

Hey I'm just a 40 yo kid and sadly, I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Adams, but I have all of his books.
In his own words...

"Ideally the original visualization should include awareness of the final proportions and desired borders of the image. However, a natural subject can be quite complex and unruly, and small details may intrude upon the edges and create visual distractions no matter what care we may take to avoid them. It is relatively easy to manage these details when using a view camera, but it can be quite difficult to be aware of them with a roll film [or digital] camera, especially if it is hand-held. I addition, the visualized final image may not fit precisely in the format of the camera; the world was not designed in 4 X 5 inch rectangles or 21/4 inch squares [or in the 3:2 aspect ratio of the digital SLR]."

Chapter 5.
Pg. 89-90
Adams, Ansel

I try to crop in camera, if for no other reason than to save myself time in post production, but my subjects are usually found at weddings and I don't always have the time to be in the perfect place at the perfect time so I have to find a way to make 300 or so wonderful images from the wider than they will be when finished images that I can get.

Then again, all that type of shooting is done with my D700 and not my Rollei. Shooting square for fun or 'art' with all the time in the world has its advantages I suppose. :)
