IMHO it is unlikely that F&H would build a meterless FX. The cost saving of
excluding a small circuit board and a little wiring is probably relatively
small in comparison to building a complete camera, especially when it would
be necessary to have stocks of both 'with' and 'without' cameras, different
literature and labeling etc. Simplest to just ignore the meter or as
mentioned elsewhere take the battery out. There is no auto or programmed
mode in the cameras, so it does not affect the primary operation of the
camera. The meter is just an onboard meter with 'pretty' lights in the
viewfinder which can be a useful exposure check if the sun suddenly goes in
or comes out during a photo series. However, OTF TTL flash metering would
also be inoperative.
A few years ago, mention was made about quality of the new FXs, with
reference in particular to the lack of automatic start of film counter
rollers in the new TLRs as opposed to the system in the 2.8 & 3.5Fs, Tele &
W/A etc cameras. Two reasons spring to mind; firstly cost and secondly, as I
have read in Claus Prochnow's RR2, the auto counter mechanism was not fitted
to the later SL66 cameras (ie 66X, 66E & 66SE) because Rollei had found that
there were differences in backing paper, film stock and sticky tape
thicknesses between manufacturers which lead to unreliable start of film
position and counting. Hence the magazine inserts for the two eras of
magazine are not interchangeable although the complete magazines can be used
on either era of camera.
Having emailed Dietmar Kanzer at F&H about the possibility of a
'part-digi/part-film' TLR, he replied that consideration had been given to
this idea and also to a full digi TLR but that all design and production
capability was currently occupied with the Hy6. He did not rule out that
more time could be spent on this idea in the future.........??
