There are several different isssues raised by your
questions. Some are related to NiCads in general, others
specific to the 6008i. My camera is about the same age as
yours, and I have noticed from the very beginning that at
times the camera doesn't respond to simply turning it on,
but stopping down the lens or switching some other function
awakened it. Have you tried that?
NiCads lose their charge when sitting unused, but may do so
in an odd way. I have noticed that at times the charger will
go into slow-charge mode when I know darn well the battery
needs some juice! I attribute that to a residual high
voltage / low current state of the battery, and partially
discharge it through a lamp before putting it in the charger
again.
NiCads do have a finite lifetime due to cells failing or
shorting out, even if they are sitting unused. It may be
that your battery is dead, and seven years is a good
lifetime.
I hope some of this helps.
Best,
Neil
