I believe that it was Richard Knoppow who posted
the URL for a Society of Optical Engineers (?)
article on the history of lens coatings. If so,
I would appreciate a repeat of the URL.

Its the Society of Vacuum Coaters at http://www.svc.org/ There is quite a lot of history on the site including interviews with several of those involved with the early days of the process. One of the PDF documents has a lock so you can't print it, a PITA but probably made necessary by some copyright provision. Of course you can always use "print screen".

Its interesting to me that lens and mirror coating has exact equivalents in electronics, namely the use of filters and transmission line sections for impedance matching, and in acoustics where analogous structures are used for the same purpose.
