Once upon a time a book on how to estimate exposure was
published by American Photographic Book Publishing Co, also
the publishers of "American Photography" magazine. This had
pages of charts showing sunlight variations in all parts of
the world for all seasons plus specific exposure information
on the films of the time. The exposure charts on the backs
of older Rolleiflex and Rolleicord cameras are simplified
versions of this type of chart.
I think there was another photoelectric meter before the
Weston but it was the first popular one and the first to
have a reliable film speed service. Earlier meters were
either extinction meters, which depend on the sensitivity of
the eye and are IMHO useless, or those like the Watkins and
the Wynne meters which used printing out paper of special
design. The Watkins and similar meters were exposed to the
light for some fixed period of time, say a minute, and the
resulting color of the paper compared to a chart. These
"actinic" meters measured actual light but were not color
sensitive and were useless in dim light. However, both
Watkins and Wynne did supply film speeds.
I have often used the meter in my Nikon F when shooting
LF because it has a well defined area of sensitivity and
I've found it to be very reliable. I've also found the
built-in meter in my Rolleiflex 2.8E to be reliable.
