Aaron, I'm going to have fix that hitch and say (and I believe this) that anyone who can make a good photograph can draw. Styles and technical draftsmanship will vary greatly, hand-eye-brain coordination will yield varying degrees of perspective distortion, psychological and emotional states may also influence the outcome, but talent won't get in the way. Your fingers will get dirty, and some charcoal dust will eventually find its way onto your lap.

Ok, I wasn't really serious, but now that you mention it, I discovered that shortly after I took up photography as a serious hobby (Rollei content: my first camera was an SL-35), my ability to draw rough sketches improved, going from the inability to sketch even rudimentary shapes to being able to at least communicate some vague notion of the subject. I think I was finally beginning to develop the analytical mental equipment necessary to conceptualize a photographic scene (what AA called "visualization") and this leaked over into my drawing ability, such as it is. In other words, the problem before was never with eye-hand coordination, but rather that my brain didn't know precisely what it wanted, so the hand was unable to provide it. Once I began to look critically for line, shadow, etc., the brain was able to give the hand more complete instructions, thus better results. I imagine this "critical eye" is a great deal of what is taught in formal drawing classes, which I have (clearly) never taken.

Best regards,
Aaron
