Wow, ham radio did reinvent itself since I departed. I was a cw operatior in
the service then was in HF, VHF and UHF. I was more active when I lived in a
metro area wasin a club. It looks like I missed out on a lot of hi-tech, but
then again at my age how much can I assimilate?
regards.

Ham radio has, to a certain extent, re-invented itself while retaining its
traditions. While newer digital mode communications comprise an
increasing number of on-air operations, nostalgia-based operations
flourish, too. The primary radio in my ham shack, for instance, is a
so-called SDR (Software Defined Radio) which is, as its name indicates,
computer-based. But, I also operate a 20-year old analog transceiver and
a "homebrew" AM (amplitude modulation) transmitter with companion '40's
era receiver. My modes of operation include voice, digital text and
imaging, and CW (Morse Code). I communicate with fellow amateur radio
operators directly "through the ether" and via satellites and the
Internet. I may not be a "typical" ham, but I'm not all that unusual,
either.
The point is, amateur radio operators have kept pace with technology --
and even pioneered it at times -- but still enjoy "retro technology".
There's room for everybody. Photography, too, will accomodate us all. As
Jim Brick pointed out, we can always travel full circle and fashion our
own glass plates and paper if need be. My grandfather did it, and enjoyed
photography for a lifetime. It sounds like fun, actually.
