The square would not be my first choice for landscapes, though
certainly it has been done and done well. 69 or 612 come to mind if
roll film's you thang...

The answer is... because they can. Many great photographers have made a more than handsome income using 35mm for landscapes. Galen Rowell, Pat O'Hara, Art Wolfe, George Lepp, Franz Lanting, etc, etc, etc.
