Folks; I have just received an e-mail from Bill Ehrke in Irving/Dallas,=20
saying his IPS (Internet Provider Service) is giving trouble and he can not=20=
send=20
messages to our group right now. He asked me to forward these comments from=
=20
him on to our group. So, here it is.
............................................................................=
..
........................................
For me, two important things make the difference in doing weddings: =20
First, no matter what the other policies are, make sure your church has an=20
experienced and well-organized wedding coordinator =E2=80=93 someone who is=20=
gentle yet=20
no-nonsense. This person will bring the whole wedding together, see that=20
everyone is paid, and mold the tone of the ceremony. The best one I know wa=
s once=20
called "a professional mother" by a nervous bride. =20
Second, prepare a form to use in all your wedding consultations. On one sid=
e=20
print a couple of paragraphs of congratulations; point out that a church=20
wedding is a worship service and that the wedding party and guests are=20
participants in worship. State that certain music is appropriate for the re=
ception and=20
other music is appropriate for worship (your coordinator and your pastor sho=
uld=20
both have already emphasized the "worship" aspect). Provide blanks to get=20
all the information about the people and the wedding. On the other side of=20=
the=20
form, outline the typical order of worship for a wedding, double- or=20
triple-spaced -- from the prelude right through the recessional and the cong=
regational=20
postlude. Include all the options that couples sometimes add, such as=20
lighting a unity candle or handing flowers to their parents. As you discuss=
the=20
music with the bride, write in each selection at the appropriate point in th=
e=20
outline, and cross out options that will not be used. Give both the bride a=
nd the=20
coordinator completed copies.
These two things =E2=80=93 the coordinator and the consultation form =E2=80=
=93 take most of=20
the headaches out of weddings. And relax -- if anything goes wrong, you can=
=20
sit there with a hymnal and strengthen your improvisational skills for a few=
=20
minutes.
