Those cry the Vox Humana Blues may be missing out on a good thing.
The early VOCE UMANA was an Italian organ stop, a Principal tuned to
celeste with the main principal in that division.
Later the reed stop Vox humana was introduced. The very short resonator,
usually a quarter of the length that would normally be present for that
pitch, creates a very hollow yet nasal tone. Some use the Vox without
tremulant as a Regal for early music.
The church Vox is voiced to be heard through the veil of sound created
by the string and string celeste. Recently I worked on the voicing of a
927...the Vox there (found as a voice palette™ stop - Thank you,
Rodgers) came out very nicely in that combination, and also can be heard
through the full slush of the Swell; the strings, flute celeste, the
voice palette™ SW geigen diapason softened and tuned to add another
celeste to the swell. Add the Vox and the tremulant and playa few tunes
and you will get a raise!
What tunes? Of course the 19th and 20th Century hymns that people love,
but don't ignore the French literature.
