[rodgersorgan] Two Question

List,

I'm not an expert in speaker systems. Our church has a Rodgers 702.
Occasionally, there is a rattle. I guess my question is whether or not the
sound is actually a rattle or a fizz. I would think that a "rattle" might
actually be something in the building and not the speaker system.

I was playing a small pipe organ at a local church. If the low "C" were
played more than 2 seconds on a particular pedal stop, there was a loud
rattling. I held the pedal down with a couple hymnbooks and started looking
around. I wandered in the small pipe chamber and found the speaking pipe,
and it was OK. I was able to locate the rattle to a metal HVAC register in
the ceiling above the choir loft. Incidentally, shortly after my visit, a
padlock was placed on the opening to the pipe chamber.

I would wonder if the rattle, in this case, might actually be a vent or some
other metal object. These things have resonant frequencies and will get to
rattling at certain notes. You may even notice the same thing in your
automobile when, at certain speeds, rattles will appear, only to disappear
when you go a little faster.

I guess I'm saying to make sure of your diagnosis before you set out on some
expensive treatment. Look at the actual speaker to see if it's cracked.
Hold down a note and search out the source of the abnormal sound.

Sincerely,
Keith Zimmerman, M.D.
