Randall Smith has just reminded me of something: "I just consider the
transposer a modern day miracle because it can transpose pipes too. That's a
HUGE advantage to me, never having a
transposer until the installation of our pipe/digital organ."
We don't always get the big picture...Rodgers has done a masterful job of
bringing the digital organ into a major position in the church music by making
a digital organ software-based,
which takes a traditionally mechanical device like a transposer (moving
keyboards to the left or right on organs, piano and harpsichords, or using
mechanical pistons or physical switches
to register pitch changes) and making it a function of software. As a software
device it can be controlled not only by the physical knob, but also by the
cancel button.
Building a console that can totally control pipes gracefully as an everyday
function is also a triumph.
Being able to set MIDI voices, including voices from other manufacturer's voice
modules, on all pistons of the organ is also a triumph.
The ability to set the overall range of expression shutter control so that the
organ can match pipework that has an older shutter control system of limited
levels.
Voicing of every note of every stop of every organ built in the church or home
that it will be playing in.
A few of these advances have been included in other instruments since Rodgers
introduced them, which further illustrates Rodgers' role as an innovator, not
working to keep up with other
builders, but stepping forward to provide leadership.
As I have said many times, Rodgers does not appear to base improvements on what
others are doing, but rather on what should be done.
