[rodgersorgan] Re: Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - Bach

Well said, Jack!! I'm envious of your 83 years on this planet! I hope I
just remember my name when I'm 83!! :>)

I've been playing organ for 30 years now and can barely read music other
thanthe old....Every-Good-Boy-Does Fine, but I did learn about 50-60 percent
of the T&F by listening to it about a million times and finally buying the
sheet music and taking several years of "hunting and pecking" to make it
sound right. It was a challenge for me as I've never taken lessons in my
life. But as Jack said, I'm also still learning it.

While my rendition is not "note-perfect", due to the intricacies of note
annotation, playing it for myself satisfies my desire to hear this piece,
andfor my non musical friends who I feel comfortable playing for, I think
they only really want to hear the initial D-pedal rumble and build-up of
notes for the grand opening of the Toccata more than anything (where's that
32 ft Contra Bourdon stop?) and they don't really know that I'm "shorting"
the piece at all.

To all others who hear me play, I make very sure they realize that I don't
read music well and have never taken a lesson.

Although organ playing is my absolute passion in life, I'm somewhat glad
thatI'm not a professional organist but I hold all you professionals out
there in complete awe as I marvel when watching your fingers and feet all
going different ways, but somehow putting together all harmony, melody and
bass to make soul-stirring music for all of us. I'm forever greatful for
that opportunity to hear and watch you!

======================================================== What a pity.
Playingthe T &F in D minor is a means of showing off the skill (or lack of
it) of the performer. Learning it well enough to play it well enough for the
public to hear it, while possibly not a challenge for organ professionals,
isa challenge for me -- and I am 83 years old. But I am still learning it
!!!Hope to master it before I die. The joy of hearing beautiful music, well
played, takes effort, but the result is worth the effort. Jack Cormack
