Randall:
In my vast experience you will find that there are sometimes people out
there. For the most part, if a person can sight read, they don't memorize,
and if a person memorizes then they don't sight read. Sometimes a person can
do both but not well. It has something to do with need. If you memorize
quickly, then you don't NEED to sight read, because you already know the
piece. Likewise, if you sight read, you don't need to memorize because you
can already play anything. When I was young, I memorized things and quickly
too I might add. I also memorized them in the proper key because I was born
with perfect pitch. It took me a very, very long time to learn how to sight
read because it was easier to buy the cd, or (back then) the record, listen
to it and voila.....go and play it. Now I sight read and memorize but I had
to make myself sight read and not rely so much on my "ear" to get me through
things.
Now I listen to music with the intent on learning it. I listen to it over
and over until it is stuck in my noodle and then I take out the music and
read it. Something like the Suzuki method.
