My first organ teacher was a large woman with big feet, corns, bunions, etc. She played in floppy bedroom slippers, just mashing her way around the pedalboard. Near as I could tell, she almost never hit a wrong note. I prefer shoes myself. Secret recipe for organ shoes: one pair (or two so you can keep a spare set in the car) comfortable shoes, fairly thin leather soles not wider nor longer than the shoes themselves, leather heels high enough to facilitate playing thirds; wear them on the street long enough to wear off the sharp edges; then wear them ONLY when mowing the lawn (riding mowers don't count)...the fine abrasion of the grass and the slight oil in the grass will put a slick finish on the soles and heels like nothing else. When you find yourself slipping and sliding all over the lawn, they're ready.
