Hi, David.
Where I differ a bit is that he definitely writes before the rediscovery
of the depth to which the organ is a polyphonic instrument; his
"architectural" notions suffer accordingly. I think this amounts to more
than a change of taste in sound, but in the conception of the instrument
itself. He is writing at roughly the time Schweitzer was discovering the
limitations of the late Romantic instruments, so there is a kind of
irony in the book.
Best,
Paul

Hello everyone,
The book, "Organ-Stops and Their Artistic Registration" by George
Ashdown
Audsley is a good reference book. However, keep in mind that it was
written
in the very early 20th century and organs, organ building and tastes
have
changed considerably over the
years.
His ideas are still valid and bear considering, but some of his
registrations
either sound "dated" or just not practical in today's interpretation of
organ
literature of that period and before because many stops (if they even
are
used in organs today) are not voiced the same as the ones he wrote
about.
However, I have a copy and frequently use it for his ideas. He also had
a
two volume set of companion books (and I don't have them in front of me)
that
deals with the building of moden pipe organs. Again, very valid yet
today,
just that our taste in sound has changed.
