[rodgersorgan] Rather disastrous recital tale...

We (Ellen and I) played a rather disastrous recital last evening....left
us sort of befuddled.
Did it as a favor to a church with a well maintained small Möller that's
32 years old. The last two weeks I noticed that the 16' Bassoon in the
pedal was playing intermittently. The 4' (a unit stop) worked fine.
Popped the lid off the console, checked to make sure the contacts were
working, and lightly abraded the surface of the contacts with a new
dollar bill. Seemed to work a bit better.
Just before the recital last evening, the 16' Bourdon was dead. Checked
the contacts, got it working. Then the Bassoon went out...but then I
noticed that higher notes on the pedalboard worked, and progressively
the lower ones came back.
At that point people were arriving in the midst of a thunderstorm (I
guess they WERE serious about hearing the organ!) So we went ahead and
played. Everything went well except for the big pieces. Ellen
mentioned afterward that she had problems every time I added stops while
she was playing, and I slaughtered...I mean slaughtered...the big Bach A
Minor Prelude and Fugue. Blood in the aisles.
People were very appreciative...the knowledgeable ones were kind.
I woke up this morning, put two and two together and realize that the
rectifier is failing, so it cannot provide enough current to drive the
larger coils on on the 16's...and every time stops are added the entire
organ falls behind as well.
It's not time to retire from playing yet!
